Synopsis

Based on the heroic epics of Ob-Ugric hero-princes, the paper analyzes the designation of some of their central concepts in the translations of the texts and the dictionaries of these languages. After investigating prince, principality, town, and castle, the conclusion is that Hungarian and German translations, in several cases—not independently of the influence of Russian as a metalanguage—obscure the world that these texts represent but paradoxically also help their understanding.
